The Magic of Disney Animation cuts its day: what changes at Hollywood Studios from September 28

The new animation experience moves to a 10 a.m.–6 p.m. schedule beginning September 28, 2026. For families, character fans, and guests with only one day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the practical move is to reserve midday time rather than save it for park closing.
The Magic of Disney Animation, the new experience inside the Roy E. Disney Animation Building at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, changes the shape of a park day in a meaningful way. Its scheduled opening date was September 14, 2026, following soft-opening days that began September 11. Through September 27, the calendar places it from park opening until 9 p.m.; beginning Monday, September 28, it is listed daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at least through mid-November.
That is not a minor scheduling note. Four fewer operating hours each day, especially the loss of evening access, changes where this stop belongs. The space combines a film, a drawing class, an indoor play area, and character greetings. It is not simply a quick walk-through for every party; depending on children’s ages and interest in animation, it can take anywhere from a short visit to a substantial part of a morning or afternoon.
For guests visiting Hollywood Studios during the fall, the practical decision is clear: do not save The Magic of Disney Animation for after dinner or assume it will still be open after a nighttime show. Posted hours can always be checked before travel, but the sound plan today is to treat 6 p.m. as the operating cutoff and build the day around it.
A schedule shift that changes the order of your day
From September 14 through September 17, the experience is listed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. On September 19 and 20, it begins at 8:30 a.m., matching Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ earlier opening, and continues until 9 p.m. Overall, through September 27 the pattern is park opening through 9 p.m. Beginning September 28, the listing changes to 10 a.m.–6 p.m. every day currently visible through mid-November.
That means the first hour of the park is not a window for this experience after September 28. Guests arriving at rope drop should use that time for high-demand attractions or transportation before heading to the building at 10 a.m. Likewise, parties planning a midafternoon hotel break need to return with room to spare: arriving at 5:40 p.m. does not ensure enough time to experience every indoor offering.
What is inside, and who benefits most
The reworked building brings together the Once Upon a Studio Theater, Olaf Draws Animation Academy, the Drawn to Wonderland Play Area, and Off the Page character greetings. The theater presents the Once Upon a Studio short with added effects and animated elements in the room. An interactive art gallery sits outside as well. It is an especially useful option when it rains, temperatures are high, or the party needs a slower-paced break without leaving the park.
For families with young children, Drawn to Wonderland should be a genuine priority rather than filler between reservations. It is an indoor play area inspired by Alice in Wonderland concept art. Guests who prefer a seated activity can choose Olaf Draws, which combines a step-by-step lesson with an Audio-Animatronics Olaf and animation artists on screen. Character fans can devote more time to Off the Page, where Mulan, Rapunzel, Chip ’n’ Dale, Donald and Daisy, Goofy, and Stitch are announced.
Families with young children: prioritize the play area before lunch or during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Character fans: arrive before 6 p.m. and allow time for queues and photos.
Adults and multigenerational groups: the theater and drawing class provide an air-conditioned break without splitting up the party.
Olaf’s class needs its own strategy
Olaf Draws should not be treated as a continuously available greeting. The experience has limited per-session capacity, and Walt Disney World plans to use a virtual queue when needed. That possibility does not mean it will operate every day, nor does it guarantee a spot; it simply makes checking the My Disney Experience app on the day essential. If the virtual queue is active, every member of the party should be properly linked before attempting to join.
It helps to decide in advance whether Olaf Draws is essential or a welcome extra. If it is essential, check its status shortly after 10 a.m. and again during the day, without scheduling a meal, transfer, or show during a possible return window. If you do not secure access, the rest of the building can still justify a visit, but it is not wise to give up a hard-to-get reservation or top-priority attraction while waiting for uncertain availability.
Early Entry and extended nights do not replace these hours
The Magic of Disney Animation is not currently scheduled during Early Entry or Extended Evening Hours. That difference matters for Disney hotel guests who often place indoor activities within those benefits. Early park access does not allow entry before 10 a.m. under the schedule beginning September 28, and an extended evening does not create a second opportunity after 6 p.m.
The strongest approach for resort guests is to use Early Entry on participating attractions and reserve this building for the middle of the day. For guests without that benefit, the shift reduces the value of arriving very early specifically for this experience, although park opening remains useful for other priorities.
Building a one-day visit around the cutoff
On a one-day visit, a sensible sequence after September 28 is to start with priority attractions at park opening, move to The Magic of Disney Animation around 10 a.m., and choose Olaf Draws first if a virtual queue or availability is in play. The theater, gallery, and greetings can then fit before or after lunch.
Save the rest of the afternoon and evening for shows, dining, attractions, and the park exit—not this experience. If your visit falls from September 14 through September 27, its 9 p.m. closing offers much more flexibility and makes postponing it possible. For trips from September 28 through at least mid-November, confirm the calendar a few days ahead: a later extension would be helpful, but it should not be the foundation for a restaurant reservation or a tightly timed itinerary.
The new 10 a.m.–6 p.m. schedule makes The Magic of Disney Animation a daytime priority, particularly for young children, animation fans, and travelers seeking character greetings. It remains valuable as an indoor refuge and a varied block of activities, but it no longer fits naturally at the end of a Hollywood Studios night.
The key limitation is not whether to visit, but whether to give it enough time before closing. Planning Olaf Draws flexibly, treating the play area as a deliberate stop, and not counting on Early Entry or Extended Evening Hours keeps an appealing new addition from becoming a rushed visit.
